Lager doesn't have to be blanded...

By Mitchel Adams, The Thatchers Arms, Mount Bures, Essex published in The Good Pub Guide November 2009

Beer enthusiasts often dismiss lager as bland and tasteless, and I have to say that often I agree. The term 'lager' comes from the German word 'lagerung' which means to store.

Traditionally lager would be stored for at least 3 weeks in chilled vessels. Unfortunately some of the bigger breweries are more interested in selling their beer quickly to follow time consuming traditions like these. As with any process, cutting corners has a detrimental effect, in this case, taste.

Many of us are aware that German & Czech lagers are still traditionally brewed and have far more flavour than mass produced big brand beers. Some of you may also know that there is a huge microbrewery movement in the USA producing some fantastic keg & bottled lagers.

The good news is that there are also an increasing number of artisan brewers in the UK producing Real Lager. These brewers have the same level of passion for their product as we have come to expect from Real Ale microbreweries. They are hand picking the finest ingredients, sourcing local malts and storing their beer correctly to allow the beers to mature.

At the beginning of October the new lobby group ‘Lager of the British Isles' (LOBI) was founded and held its first major event ‘British Lager Week' from the 12th – 18th. The aim of the event was to change perceptions and raise the profile of British Lager. The artisan producers do not have huge marketing budgets and rely on the quality of their product and word of mouth in order to keep going.

At The Thatchers we stock a selection of draught & bottled beers from artisan brewer Meantime as well as a draught lager from Calvors, only 3.8%, but full of flavour. Calvors has been gaining in popularity since we started stocking it earlier this year and October saw sales overtake Carlsberg for the first time to become our biggest selling lager brand. Try asking your local pub get off of the 'blandwagon' and stock a Real Lager.

The Ormskirk Baron

Beer blogger 15th July 2011

I was lucky enough to be asked by Ales By Mail if I would like to attend their first craft beer & food tasting night held at the Mustard Bar & Bistro a couple of weeks ago. It was a six-course meal with each food item paired with a specific beer:

  • • Sambrooks Wandle ale with homemade scotch egg & pork scratching
I'm not a massive fan of Wandle on it's own but with the food it was the perfect match

  • • Pitfield Ginger beer with ham hock terrine & pineapple chutney
The ginger ale lacked anything exciting about it but was saved by the lovely taste of the terrine

  • • Calvors Premium Lager with smoked bacon, brie & cranberry pie
A perfect match - such a lovely lager and amazing pie - yum!

It was an excellent evening, both Richard of Mustard & Paul from Ales By Mail did a great job talking us through the courses and the food & drink was lovely!

Spring

Erica Clegg, Spring Agency 6 October 2011

Spring was delighted to sponsor and judge the Best Suffolk Drink category in this year's Archant and Adnams Suffolk Food & Drink Awards.

Public voting led to three extraordinary finalists: Aspall's Premier Cru Cyder, Stoke Farm Pear Juice and Calvors Premium Lager. I spent an enormously enjoyable day visiting the three, and having the immense privilege of guided tours by the owners (passionate about their craft, to a man) and tastings.

Calvors is the baby of the three – set up in 2008 by Alec Williamson on the family farm, in a brewery he has built himself in a barn. It's a delight to discover that the range of lagers produced is full flavoured and varied, extremely high quality and a firm equal of any of the best European lagers. I'm at a loss to understand why we brew so little proper lager in the UK, and Calvors deserves to become a flagship British brand. Alec's imagination, pluck and skill deserve all the recognition that can be heaped on him.

From those that are selling Calvors...

The Brewery Tap

Mike Keen – Landlord, The Brewery Tap, Ipswich

"Calvors is bloody great. As soon as we took over the pub we switched
from the previous landlord's multinational lagers & switched to 3.8% &
5% Calvors on draught. The customer service is excellent but more
importantly, the customers love it. No customers have deserted because
we don't have their favourite fizzy brewed in God-knows-where and it has reinforced our no-nonsense, English-sourced, top quality offering.
Highly recommended."

The Chequers

Email received from a satisfied customer! (and confirmed to us by Pat Spillane, the Landlord of The Chequers, Gazeley)

"Sitting in the garden of The Chequers, Gazeley enjoying a pint of your lovely lager. Landlord tells me it’s the fastest selling lager he has everknown!"

The Fat Cat

Liz – Manageress, The Fat Cat, Ipswich

"We pride ourselves on selling top quality, tasty real ales both from local brewers and from those all over the country. Our lager selection also has to be top quality. Calvors Premium lager sells very well, even alongside the more well known brands such as Bitburger and Staropramen. Calvors appeals because of its local origin and excellent taste."

The Barn Restaurant

Louise – Restaurant Manageress, The Barn Restaurant, Pidley, Cambs
